Silver Series: Spirit Family Reunion “I’ll Find A Way”

We knew very little about Spirit Family Reunion, besides a few tracks we’d heard but otherwise there’s not much out there on them. But when they came to the park we knew we were in for a real treat. Like the resurrection of the soggy-bottom boys, they were lightly dusted in overalls, with banjos and tambourines in hand. The quintessential busking band. Their presence felt like we’d managed to pluck the straight from the deep South, but they’re really from Brooklyn, NY. When we finally set up under a tree, Nick began to sing “I’ll Find A Way” and then it hits you, you’re in the presence of something really special. They’re so authentic that what would otherwise be considered a little kitschy is totally inviting and warm. It’s so incredibly believable that you’re singing along to all the words, and fixated on this group of rag-tag musicians that’d likely hitch hike their way home. Nick’s voice is a force, it’s got the vulnerability of a man bearing his heart, with the courage to do just that to anyone willing to listen. Their music is an homage to a time where folk artists reigned. With whistles, hollers and foot stomps it feels like you’re apart of whatever they’re creating. This was, collectively, our favorite session of the week.
