As part of our Fourth Estate Leadership Summit this August, we’re partnering with more than 40 top social brands to be part of our Common Good Exchange so that participants can interact and meet the people behind forward-thinking organizations.

We’re excited to welcome the Keep a Breast Foundation’s Non-Toxic Revolution to the Summit.

In 1999, the founder of the Keep A Breast Foundation (KAB), Shaney jo Darden, sought out inspiration to raise awareness about breast cancer after a friend and fellow artist was diagnosed with the disease. After seeing a lack of creative energy in charities that were mostly targeted toward an older demographic, she attempted to connect a younger generation of women with information about breast cancer.

Since it’s initial launch, KAB has successfully opened a dialogue with youth about breast cancer through multi-faceted artist partnerships and programs such as it’s ‘I Love Boobies‘ merchandise, traveling education booths, grants and it’s prevention program, Non Toxic Revolution.

Staying true to KAB’s mission, Non Toxic Revolution’s (NTR) goal is to educate and inspire a generation to “revolt against the dangers of toxic chemicals in their environment and food supply.” Research shows that these chemicals are common cancer-causing toxins, so NTR provides a proactive approach to lowering cancer risk by giving people tips on how to maintain long-term health and educate them with alternative ways to lessen our society’s dependence on hazardous products.

At its very beginnings, art and simplicity were key factors to the development of the program and because of that they teamed up with Shepard Fairey to develop the vision behind the campaign. Naturally, this led to an eight-city street art campaign.

Over the past years, Non Toxic Revolution has been fostering a unique approach to showcasing society’s environmental impact through art and education, and on August 8-11 we will connect their vision with thousands of activists at our Fourth Estate Leadership Summit. “Join the revolution” and apply to attend the summit HERE.

Look no further than the Fourth Estate Leadership Summit from August 8-11th. Invisible Children has curated an unforgettable lineup of innovative organizations, including charity: water, TOMS, To Write Love on Her Arms, and many more. During the Summit, the Common Good Exchange is your chance to interact with the visionaries behind these incredible organizations.

One such organization is Saving Innocence. The organization’s mission is to rescue and restore child victims of sex trafficking through strategic partnerships with local law enforcement, social service providers, and schools, while mobilizing communities to prevent abuse and increase neighborhood safety. They are accomplishing this through three-tiered approach: Prevent, Rescue, and Restore.

We’re beyond excited to partner with Saving Innocence this August in Los Angeles. They’ll provide Summit attendees with the valuable knowledge and resources needed to help become a voice for those affected by human trafficking.
Earlier this week, the winners of the $23 million Global Impact Awards were announced. The Google-led program hopes to instill technological innovation into the nonprofit world.

Jacquelline Fuller, Director of Giving at Google, had this to say on Monday:

Today we’re launching the Global Impact Awards to support organizations using technology and innovative approaches to tackle some of the toughest human challenges. From real-time sensors that monitor clean water to DNA barcoding that stops wildlife trafficking, our first round of awards provides $23 million to seven organizations changing the world.

In the past, Google has awarded $100 million in grants, given $1 billion in technology, and devoted 50,000 hours of volunteer time from its employees.

The nonprofits that will benefit this year are charity: water, Consortium for the Barcode of Life, DonorsChoose.org, Equal Opportunity Schools, Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, GiveDirectly, and World Wildlife Fund.

Most of us are able to walk about ten feet over to the kitchen faucet, turn it on, and immediately fresh, clean water is pouring into our glass. Simple. Easy. Clean. However, the reality is that the lack of access to clean water is what thousands of people face around the world.

A recent article published in Aljazeera discusses the issue of how infections attributed to unsafe water and poor sanitation are affecting people in northern Uganda. This has been a progressive problem throughout the region and is not aided by the lack of adequate healthcare that could cure these infections with proper medical treatment.

In 2010, Invisible Children began the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) initiative. The initiative provides rural communities surrounding selected Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) groups access to safe drinking water and improves the sanitation and hygiene of group members, their households and the community.

As of May 2011, 20 boreholes have been drilled in the communities of our original 20 VSLA groups and over 5,000 community members are reaping the benefits of having accessible, clean water. These boreholes were constructed by International Lifeline Fund in partnership with Invisible Children Uganda, and were funded by Charity Water.

There is still a long road ahead to ensure that those who need accessible clean water have the means to receive it. But little by little, one travels far.
