Teacher Exchange: Ready for takeoff

Six teachers from Invisible Children’s Schools for Schools program are preparing for the trip of a lifetime. This December and January, in addition to braving weather unlike any in Uganda,  they will be visiting classrooms in the U.S. and Canada, learning new teaching methods and sharing about Ugandan education and culture.

Last week they underwent training to prepare for what to expect during the time abroad, from culture shock to weather shock. Teachers who were part of last year’s exchange came to talk about their experiences and offer advice for the current batch of teachers – like being prepared for boneless meat and where to buy winter gloves on sale.

The Teacher Exchange Program was launched in 2007 to facilitate mutual learning for teachers and cultural exposure for students. Twenty to thirty secondary school teachers from around the world come to teach and interact with Ugandan teachers for six weeks each summer, and a group of Ugandan teachers do the same in the U.S. or Canada each winter as part of the Reciprocal Teacher Exchange Program.

Applications for participating in the Teacher Exchange Summer of 2012 are now available for international teachers interested in spending a summer teaching in Uganda.

We’ll update you on the experiences of Walter, Churchill, Joseph, Elizabeth, Rosemary and Denis as they venture into life in the U.S. and Canada in the coming months. A special thanks to Better World Books for making this trip possible!

-Bethany

Representative McGovern praises Auburn High School’s involvement with Invisible Children

This has been an incredible few months for progress in the efforts to expose the issue of the LRA and bring international attention to eliminating the conflict.

The latest addition to this list of progress is a recent event held in Auburn, Massachusetts, with long-standing Invisible Children supporter Representative James McGovern.  At the even, he made statements regarding youth involvement and influence in the White House’s decision to send advisory troops to Central Africa to assist in the LRA situation.

The Worcester Telegram & Gazette has the story and McGovern’s quotes.

McGovern lauds Auburn High efforts to help children in Central Africa

By Ellie Oleson

For the past four years, students and staff at Auburn High School have been making a difference in the lives of children and families in Central Africa.

The effort began when 2000 Auburn High graduate Zachary F. Barrows – who had returned to teach history at the school from 2004 to 2008 – showed students “Invisible Children: Rough Cut,” a documentary about the struggles of the children in war-torn Uganda and Central Africa. There, boys and girls were being abducted and forced to become child soldiers or sex slaves to rebels led by Joseph Kony of the Lord’s Resistance Army.

Mr. Barrows and Auburn High Social Studies Department head Donna M. Heidemann challenged the students at Auburn High to raise $1,000 to support Invisible Children Inc., a non-profit organization working to stop the kidnapping and use of child soldiers and to help restore affected communities in Africa.

“That first year, the students raised $17,000,” Mr. Barrows said.

Because the school was one of the top fundraisers in the country, it was awarded a trip for three to Central Africa. Mr. Barrows and then-students Brittany Higgins and Adam Hughes traveled to Uganda.

JOEL P WEST – SHOULDER SEASONS

Joel P West’s music is like a deep reservoir for those who are lonesome and prefer it that way. He himself appears nearly always preoccupied, whether it be satiating wanderlust, finding new ways to rebel against the mediocrity of language when applied to things he stands in awe of: mountains, the night sky, stretches of evergreens; taking what’s left- metaphor and observations and when that doesn’t satisfy, bringing in the swimming ease of violin, cello and keys. When I was sent over a recent collection of songs called Shoulder Seasons I was expecting there would be even more terrain covered, more books read and more insight to share.

GUARDS new Yours Truly Video: “I SEE IT COMING”

A full orchestra of friends. A small church. Invisible Children’s former Art Director on drums. GUARDS. and Yours Truly. My heaven.

Yours Truly always finds a way to up the ante when it comes to their videos and this is definitely a milestone. GUARDS really impressed us last year at SXSW when they played in an abandoned pool and the full sound of “I See It Coming” takes it to a new level.

Support GUARDS and DEER TICK in building radio towers in Central Africa on their team page HERE.

Great work guys… and gal.
xKenny
