About

We believe IC is not just a charity, but a group of people choosing to live differently. This blog highlights what we're up to as an organization, what inspires us, challenges us, and makes us laugh. It's our collective mind written down. We invite you to read, think critically, and speak openly.

INVISIBLE CHILDREN INC.

Invisible Children uses film, creativity and social action to end the use of child soldiers in Joseph Kony's rebel war and restore LRA-affected communities in central Africa to peace and prosperity.

Thank you, Little Sunshines

Little Sunshines is an awesome group based out of Lebanon, (yes, you read that right, Lebanon). The group’s focus is to get the Arab community involved in raising awareness and funds for non-profits “tackling children crises on the African continent, and to raising awareness in the Middle East about key challenges facing children in Africa.”

Well, we are certainly happy to say that Little Sunshines has partnered with us and has just committed to raising $6000 for Invisible Children’s Frontline Campaign. So send them a thank you and then check out their work. They’re just another example of the awesome work our international supporters are committing to help with ending this war once and for all.

Trick-or-Treat for Invisible Children

First and foremost, Happy Halloween.

Second, and almost as important as the holiday greeting, we want to equip you with a tool to assist in tonight’s Trick-or-Treat for Invisible Children fundraiser, as detailed in the the Frontline Fundraising: Weekly Themes video.

You can download a PDF flyer to cut up and hand out tonight when you go door-to-door asking for donations for the Protection Plan.  This is definitely a helpful tool, but the most valuable asset you have should be a short, descriptive explanation about what you are doing and why you are fundraising.

Get creative in your approach – offer candy to the people at the door instead of asking for candy from them, bring baked goods to give out in exchange for donation, have Invisible Children themed costumes (we’ve heard talk of some sweet radio tower outfits), post up on the corner at a college with candy, etc.

Have fun and get your pitch down.

If anyone asks for the tax ID number, it is 54-2164338.

Download the PDF flyer at this link.

_______

E-mail any photos or fundraising ideas to communications@invisiblechildren.com and we might feature you on the blog or give you a trip to San Diego.  You can watch the weekly Livestream on Wednesdays at 5 PM PST to see more fundraising ideas and hear our winners of trips to Uganda and San Diego.

The Musician Coalition: Band of the Day – The Blackout

With only 35 days left, we know that it’s time to go full force with fundraisers. While the time restraint may seem daunting, our new friends The Blackout (Welsh post-hardcore band) want you to know that it’s a lot easier than it looks.

The Blackout ran their first Musician Coalition fundraiser (and first time ever Invisible Children fundraiser) just the other night. By simply asking for donations from their guest list they were able to raise £200 (roughly $320) already. Their next two shows pulled in even more, and now The Blackout is just shy of their goal with £450 ($720).

While on tour all across Europe, The Blackout plans to continue fundraising until they’ve hit their mark, with natural hope to exceed it too. We’re excited to hear how well their tour goes and to continue working with them more in the future.

Legacy Scholarship Program: Students plan to give back

Last week I had a chance to stop by Gulu High and spend some time with a group of our Legacy Scholarship Program (LSP) students who are in their last year of secondary school.

The LSP provides a gateway to scholastic success through financial assistance, extracurricular activities, and mentoring. Acceptance into the program is based on a combination of academic performance and level of vulnerability. Each LSP student receives a full-paid, merit based scholarship, and is assigned a mentor in order to ensure academic accountability, encourage scholastic achievement, and foster leadership skills.

While I sat and talked with the students, I heard about their future plans to become lawyers, teachers, and economists.  And after talking for just a few minutes, it soon became apparent that I was sitting with a group of students who are dedicated to giving back. When asked where they would like to work in the future, each and every one of them told me that their main priority is to first enrich their communities, and then to reach out to other areas of the world. Without a doubt, these students are eager to contribute positively to their communities.

Joyce, who is currently the LSP’s top performing student at Gulu High, left us with a gracious send off message in which she thanked all of those who have contributed to making her education possible and encouraged us to continue our support. I have no doubt that Joyce and her classmates will go far.

Check in for more LSP updates.

-Juliana

Livestream 10/26 Recap: Halloween & Sam Veatch

Every Wednesday of the Frontline Campaign, when the clock strikes 5 PM PST, we take to our Livestream page to discuss effective fundraising, share updates on our programs, give away trips to Uganda and San Diego, premier videos, play games, and have a generally merry time.

This past Wednesday, we held a Halloween themed broadcast to coincide with the holiday and our first weekly fundraising theme.  As voted by our supporters on Facebook, Jason dressed up as Peter Pan and Kenny as Captain Hook.  We bobbed for apples, Kenny and Jason attempted to eat 300 candy corn in 50 seconds, and Jason spit up live on the Internet.

Top 5: How did you hear about Invisible Children?

One of the best parts about working at Invisible Children is the finding out all the different ways everyone else got involved. From seeing the Rough Cut in high school or meeting a roadie in a Starbucks, there is no one right way to get involved with Invisible Children. In fact, here’s a few examples of some of the best ways people first heard about IC. :
#5) Jenn Petti, Customer Service Intern:
“IC came to my church on the Legacy tour in 2010. A future IC intern, Amy Berr talked up the screening like mad, so I figured, why not. My heart broke into a million pieces that night. Tony was on that tour and I was so humbled and overwhelmed by his strength. No hardship I’d ever faced could stack up to what he and kids like him had faced. I walked away committing to Legacy, with a bunch of merch, and an intense desire to do my part to raise awareness about the issue.”

Aid for Africa, we love you.

If you’ve heard of Aid for Africa you know the awesome charities that they feature who provide help to sub-sarahan communities. Well Invisible Children is lucky enough to be a member charity with Aid for Africa.

We could not be more grateful to Aid for Africa because not only have they raised numerous donations for us, they have also been great supporters of us in general. Through their campaigns they always strive to bring attention to LRA conflict and numerous other worthy causes. We’re also very lucky to be in their CFC campaign and one of their member charities because in order to be considered, an organization must pass stringent fiscal accountability. It is a standard that we’re happy to strive for.

Show their page a little love if you have a moment to learn more about their awesome work. And to give them a great big thank you for helping Invisible Children.
