About

We believe IC is not just a charity, but a group of people choosing to live differently. This blog highlights what we're up to as an organization, what inspires us, challenges us, and makes us laugh. It's our collective mind written down. We invite you to read, think critically, and speak openly.

INVISIBLE CHILDREN INC.

Invisible Children uses film, creativity and social action to end the use of child soldiers in Joseph Kony's rebel war and restore LRA-affected communities in central Africa to peace and prosperity.

Billabong party: Masters of Maple auction off hand-made snare drums

As though you need yet another good reason to come to the Billabong party Thursday night (TOMORROW), our friends at Masters of Maple Drums will be donating two hand-built snare drums. Both will be auctioned off on Thursday night and all the proceeds will go to Invisible Children.

Masters of Maple, based in SoCal, hand makes drums out of the most exotic timbers in the world. When we say production is limited, we mean that in 2009 they made 25 drum kits and snares. In 2010 they will only produce 30 drum kits and snares. In other words, extremely limited.

Owner and founder Sahir Hanif explained to us why he continues to sell a few high-quality drums instead of switching to mass production. It’s such an inspiring philosophy that we just had to quote it here:

“What looks like a drastic change is simple. High demand causes companies to lose focus; I needed to keep Masters of Maple aligned with its core competency: building the best drums one at a time to rigorous standards, using components and materials of the highest caliber. The design and ordering process is truly organic: customers and artists are able to select everything: from finish options, to the blending of wood species, and even the cut of veneers to make their shells. Each consultation is truly unique, and I am there every step of this incredible journey. I think of it as a tailored suit: they’re simply using my hands to create something that fits. I have no desire to lose that connection, along with everything being hand-made.”

In yet another gesture of support for IC, all of the limited drums produced in 2010 will be accompanied by an IC bracelet. So at the Billabong party, be sure to stop by the Masters of Maple display and make a bid.

In case you haven’t bought your ticket yet, the Billabong party is on the back lot of Paramount Studios. It starts at 7pm on June 10. Tickets are $30 and all proceeds benefit Invisible Children. Find the rest of the deets here.
