About

We believe IC is not just a charity, but a group of people choosing to live differently. This blog highlights what we're up to as an organization, what inspires us, challenges us, and makes us laugh. It's our collective mind written down. We invite you to read, think critically, and speak openly.

INVISIBLE CHILDREN INC.

Invisible Children uses film, creativity and social action to end the use of child soldiers in Joseph Kony's rebel war and restore LRA-affected communities in central Africa to peace and prosperity.

Introducing the Biggest Book Drive in History

This is big. Really big. Like, seriously big. Ginormously, massively big.

Okay, enough with the hyperbole — bottom-line is that Invisible Children is giving you the chance to get involved without spending a dollar. Donate your old books to IC and they can be sold to raise money for northern Uganda. Easy as that.

130 bracelets, please…

With our international tour wrapping up this week, stories continue to make their way around our offices about the amazing things happening on the road. Team Mid-Atlantic is being talked about right now because of the teacher who handed a student her personal credit card, and asked her to purchase 130 Invisible Children bracelets (times that by $20 and we’re talking about a $2,600 purchase!). Adam Litchfield is one of the Mid-Atlantic roadies and has the whole story for you…

So, we were in Charlotte, NC, today, spending the whole day at Myers Park High School. We arrived in the morning and got it started with an assembly of around 500 students and teachers. We showed GO and the audience was loving it. Right after the screening we were taking some questions, and spent a an awkward moment looking at each other, until someone came down to ask the first question. (more…)

A Poem from Monarch School

Last week, IC founder Laren Poole went to a school in downtown San Diego to screen GO and get students involved. The kids at Monarch were blown away that kids in Uganda were going through something so much, and have already responded in a huge way by collecting a ton of books.

A student named Brandon immediately wrote a poem after the screening. (more…)

Brick by Brick: Building a Brighter Future

Invisible Children recently wrapped up all the Schools for Schools: Round One construction projects (over 1.3 million US dollars) here in northern Uganda and decided to throw a monumental event to celebrate the amazing progress that has been made—this wouldn’t have been possible without all of you who’ve participated in Schools for Schools. The Grand Commissioning Ceremony of Round One Projects was held at Layibi Secondary School on October 29th, 2008.

“Brick by Brick: Building a Brighter Future” was the theme of the day.  ‘Brick by Brick’ represented the rebuilding process in general, as IC’s mission for sustainable development cannot happen overnight. The focus was not on the completion of Round One, but rather on the fresh start the projects created for secondary school students in northern Uganda—looking ahead to all the work that will be done in the future.

The ceremony was also held so IC could officially hand over the Schools for Schools projects to the Government of Uganda and the local community—as both are stakeholders and need to take ownership of rebuilding the education system in northern Uganda (with the committed help of Invisible Children).

Now that the background is out of the way, I’ll try my best to recap this fabulous event. Words can’t exactly do it justice; perhaps some photos will help.
